Six devastating effects of cutting CDC funding (The Hill)


THE HILL | Congress will soon be faced with many momentous decisions that will affect the lives of Americans for years to come. One of the most critical threats to our health is the potential for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention‘s (CDC) budget to be reduced to its lowest levels in 20 years — at a time when the public’s health is more at risk than ever. Tom Frieden, former Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2009-2017), and I believe that the fiscal Year 2018 federal budget for CDC needs to protect the agency so it can protect Americans. The administration’s proposed budget would slash CDC spending by 17 percent, devastating life-saving programs and setting back more than a decade of progress. Here are just a half-dozen examples from the scores of proposed cuts.
